Kanazawa Jazz Street takes place every year in the fall during the autumn holidays, with over 200 street performances staged at about 20 venues throughout the city center. It attracts many visitors from within and outside of Ishikawa Prefecture, and has become an established music event in which you can enjoy the many splendors of Kanazawa. Last year, to commemorate the five year anniversary of Kanazawa Jazz Street, we had an impressive series of concerts featuring Chick Corea, the Count Basie Orchestra with Keiko Lee, world-class jazz singer Dianne Reeves, and other top artists at Hokkoku Shimbun’s Akabane Hall and Kanazawa’s Bunka Hall. Also, as part of a tourism promotion plan to attract more people to come and enjoy Kanazawa’s food, music, and sights, Kanazawa Jazz Street invited senior citizens from the Kanto and Kansai areas to perform as a new aspect of the event, and they were very well received. Performers from Norway and the Korean city Incheon, as well as a big band from Naha, Okinawa, made for a very cosmopolitan lineup. Despite the rainy weather, over the three day festival, about 700 artists performed for over 75,000 onlookers. This year, we aim to have an even more spectacular jazz festival, with the main venues being the Kanazawa city center, Ishikawa Prefecture Chuo Koen Park, and the historically significant Oyama Jinja Shrine. Along with exceptional Japanese sake, original cocktails, and delicious food, there will be quality music for all to enjoy at their leisure. We are working to use this event to spread Kanazawa’s appeal. Just like every other year, crowd-pleasing street performances, multi-award-winning university big bands such as that of the Kunitachi College of Music, renowned Japanese professional combo bands, adult jazz groups from all over the country, as well as co-performances by professionals with bands from their hometown will fill the street corners and parks of Kanazawa with exciting new performances over three days.
The events will be comprised of:
- Live Street Corner Performances by professional, amateur and student bands in outdoor areas and streets in the city center.
- Premium Concerts at venues that showcase Kanazawa’s appeal as a historical and creative city.
- Special Concerts by top artists from Japan and abroad at concert halls.
- The 5th Kanazawa Jazz Street Competition 2014 to motivate and scout new talent.
- A special workshop by an international artist
While continuing to build on the experience of the previous iterations, the purpose of Kanazawa Jazz Street remains: “creating a buzz” in the city and attracting more tourists from a wider area to Kanazawa.
